OK so what is a scuddlebutt?
Scuddlebutt (also spelled Scuttlebutt) is a nautical term for the barrel (or butt) in which the ship's daily ration of water is kept. This important supply is kept in a locked compartment called the Scuttle.
Because the ship's crew would congregate here and talk, Scuddlebutt also became a slang term for ship's gossip.
