Simple epithelial cheek cells stained in haematoxylin and eosin. Notice how haematoxylin stains the nuclei purple, while the eosin stains the cytoplasm of the cells a reddish pink.

A simple blood smear stained again with haematoxylin and eosin. Notice the blue smeared colour around the centre. This is most likely a bunching of platelets, while the larger blue granulocytes (collection of white blood cells) are stained dark blue by the haematoxylin.
