Here
at scuddlebutt3.co.uk we take Internet security very seriously and we
guarantee 100% secure online shopping on this site. However, there are
threats outside of this site that you should always look out for. The
Internet can be a risky place and therefore, we have decided to construct
this easy to understand guide that gives you the low down on some of the
most common Internet threats and what you should look out for. We have
also included a section on how you can tell if an online shopping site is
secure.
Modern day Internet security threats
Spyware Spyware is the name given to the software that attaches
itself to your computer from the Internet without permission. It often
gathers private information from a users computer and sends this data over
the Internet back to the software manufacturer. If you have a large amount
of spyware software on your computer, you will notice that your Internet
and sometimes your computer in general will run slower than usual and
software conflicts may occur. Adware Adware is the name given to the software that attaches itself to your computer from the Internet without permission. It is very similar to spyware although, instead of gathering information from you and your computer, it displays irritating little pop-up advertisements and messages. Again, large amounts of adware software can slow your computer down and may also cause software conflicts.
Spyware and adware
are difficult to avoid. However, there are a number of applications
available, which prevent spyware and adware from attaching to your
computer. There are numerous commercial applications available, which are
easy to find in most computer stores. Also, there are a number of free
ones available. For example, Microsoft provide a free program called
Windows
Defender, which is very advanced and frequently updates itself with
information on new spyware and other similar Internet threats.
Viruses, Worms and Trojans Computer
viruses, worms and Trojans are all illegal software that download
themselves onto computers. Once downloaded they install themselves and run
in the background of the operating system. Firstly, viruses as we all know
have the capability to do whatever their creator has programmed them to
do. For example, most of them can slow down a computers performance and
then cause it to act strangely and in many cases cause havoc and serious harm to the computer. Worms behave similarly in that they are able
to replicate themselves just like a virus and then infect other files or
computers. Trojans or Trojan
horses are simple programs that download automatically from suspicious
websites and perform certain functions that a user would not want. All of these types of illegal software are often created
deliberately to cause malicious damage or unintentional side effects to a
computer. In order to prevent damage by illegal software such as viruses, worms and Trojans, a user would need to basically isolate the computer from any networks, Internet connections or external storage media (floppy disks or CD’s etc). Nowadays, many of us would find it incredibly difficult living without any of these. Therefore, the simplest way to prevent damage by illegal software is to install anti-virus software, which has the ability to identify and block illegal software such as viruses, worms and Trojans. Some anti-virus software also has the capability to even stop spyware, adware and Spam from gaining access to a computer. Anti virus software also updates frequently with new virus definitions / information. There are free anti-virus applications available however, most commercial applications are much more powerful and sometimes require an annual subscription.
Overall,
the types of preventative software described above are incredibly
important, as all computers connected to the Internet should have some
type of security software installed.

Shopping over the Internet When shopping over the Internet and giving out personal information such as payment details, you should always check to make sure that a number of common security measures are present and operating.
You should always check for:
The
Padlock When giving credit card or other similar personal details over the Internet, you should ALWAYS check for the padlock symbol in the bottom right hand corner of the browser window (see below). This symbols means that the site you are on is 100% safe and secure. If you do not see this symbol, what ever you do, do not give any personal details over the Internet.
https Again, when giving any personal or payment details over the Internet as well as checking for the padlock symbol, always check the address in the browser address bar at the top of the window. Instead of the usual http, it should now read https. This again, means that the browser you are in is completely safe and secure.
