Safety Guide

THE SAFE HANDLING OF CHEMICALS

Many chemicals are dangerous. Here at Scuddlebutt we always try to provide the safest chemicals available. Where there are alternative chemicals available we always offer the safest one - for example in microscopy we offer a water based mountant as well as the more common xylene based ones. Despite this, when using Scuddlebutt chemicals, and when using anyone else's chemicals it is important to remember that.

THERE IS NO SUCH THING AS A SAFE CHEMICAL

There are only safer ones. Any chemical can harm you - you can drown in water and even oxygen can be poisonous at pressure. The important thing is that chemicals should always be treated with respect and common sense.

1. Store chemicals safely and always keep them out of the reach of children and pets.

2. Handle them carefully and it is always wise to understand any symbols on the chemicals and within the laboratory environment.

3. Wash off any spills on your skin.

4. Remove any contaminated clothing and wash it before re-use.

5. When working with chemicals always wash your hands before using the lavatory (and after, obviously).

6. When working with some chemicals especially dusty ones, e.g. powder dyes, wear a dust mask. Disposable ones are readily available.

7. Wear eye protection and gloves.

8. Never eat or drink within the laboratory as accidental ingestion may occur.

Other hazards

1. When working with Scuddlebutt products always try to be aware of other, non-chemical hazards which may be present.

2. When working with hot or boiling liquids be aware of the hazard of burns from splashes or spills, as well as the danger from the heat source.

3. When working with laser dyes be aware of the danger of eye damage from coherent light and consider wearing protective goggles.

4. When working with microscopy materials be aware of the possible danger of infection from biological specimens.

Really, it comes down to common sense. If you behave in a reckless or stupid way with these materials you can be hurt. With care and simple basic precautions this is much less likely. Magnacol Ltd / Scuddlebutt3 and its owner(s) accept no responsibility for damage or injury arising from your inappropriate use or handling of it's products.

Protective equipment is available from our laboratory safety equipment section.
